Children's Birthday Parties - The Flemish Version

One of the many cultural differences that I have to learn here is about children’s birthday parties or at least, sending your child to one or organizing one yourself! I remember from my childhood or even as a young adult growing up back in the far east – both the child and parent will be invited to the party. It goes without saying that you stay too (as a parent) to join in the fun and appreciate all the good food. You also know the other children’s parents, so its pleasant for you to catch up with friends.

On the contrary, it is a whole different ballgame here! My first encounter - I was caught in an embarrassing situation! Because I stupidly did not read up about the customs here, thus I made the host felt awkward. She also felt embarrassed to ask me to leave, so she kept quiet and let me stay on till the party was over. My little one and I arrived pretty early, there was only one kid there. As others started showing up, I noticed, all of them, left their numbers with the host then said their goodbyes and left! I mean these adults / parents trust the host enough to just leave their kid in a strangers house. No one gave me the impression that they know each other well. The whole concept seems so strange to me, do I have to learn how to adapt to this sort of practice too? But I did apologize to the host saying that this is the first birthday party that we got an invite for and thus a first for me too here in Belgium. She was kind enough to explain to me about the practice and how it’s such a norm to leave your child off at the party and take off yourself. Apparently a lot of them see it as a few hours off from the kids! That’s how laid back parents here are about trusting their child or children with others.

That one episode helped me a lot especially when we had to organize a birthday party for the little one and her friends. The task itself made me feel like an event manager, handling the setting, place, crowd, security – making sure we have all contact numbers and all. It was stressful but happy, loud and almost deafening shrills you hear gives you a sense of satisfaction that the party was a huge success. Thinking up of original ideas is also the challenging part. The parents always try to ‘one up’ each other but I like to think so far we have not done so badly for ourselves as well. We had so far only 2 – one at a fastfood restaurant with a private fun & games session for N and her friends. The 2nd one, we organize a clay workshop – that was a huge success! FYI, the 3 years of kindergarten (yes, they go to 3 years of kindergarten here!) is very much artistically inclined.

Anyways, the 2nd time, I had to leave N off, I broke down and cried! I think it was an overwhelming realization of your little one growing up and that as a parent (especially one from a different cultural background) I have to suck it up and learn how to let go and be more trustful!

The Local Tourist

Unlike the country where I was born and raised, where I have practically seen almost every tourist attraction, parks, museums and shopping malls. Here in Belgium, I have yet to explore many more places of interest. It is after all 50 times bigger than where I came from.

Thus, since it’s the Easter school holidays and all 3 of us are at home, we headed to the Caves of Han-sur-Lesse. It is quite a bit of a drive from Ghent – almost 2 hours. It lies in the French speaking part of the country - a small, cosy and quaint village set against gorgeous rolling hills of the Ardennes . It is a whole day affair visiting the caves, the safari park and museums (a very family friendly place indeed). We enjoyed our visit so much, such a lovely place making it a perfect day trip especially for the little one!

Spring has Sprung!

My apologies for the silence. I have been (and still am) recuperating from a recent surgery. Going back to work is still abit heavy but I am getting better & stronger everyday.

Spring has sprung and the sun is out in its full glory. We have been blessed with weeks of sunny blue skies so far! And when it’s this nice outside, the whole of Ghent seems to be out and about too. You see all kinds wondering about, filling up the café’s, parks, river banks and some look like they came straight out of their winter hibernation. Easter school hols is just a few days away too and that means, we are away on our next vacay! Woohoo! Cant wait! Enjoy spring my dearest readers.

A Day of Mourning

Today, Friday the 16th of March 2012, is a day of national mourning for the loss of lives. It is an overwhelming feeling to see and hear that radio’s, television stations, schools, offices, universities and everyone out and about in shopping centre’s or even at the park stood still to observe the 11am one minute of silence. I can’t bear to hear nor read about this accident anymore, I get too emotional and the tears start trickling down my face. My deepest and most sincere condolences to the parents, families and friends who lost a loved one in that tragic accident. Please know that the whole country and its population are mourning with you.

Utrecht

I have never been to Utrecht and the Rough Guides, has less than 10 pages on it. I think the main must see monument is the Dom Tower and their cathedral. But like many other cities in The Netherlands, it is beautiful lined with romantic canals, unique designer shops and antiques too. Along the canals you are spoiled for choices with many restaurants offering international cuisine from Indian, Thai to Mediterranean.

This trip is an all girls weekend getaway, the last girlie getaway I went on was more than 10 years ago! And of course, it was always with single friends. This time around, we are all happily married with children and time away from the significant other and little ones is very welcoming. Although I was knackered from the lack of sleep, I was a happy camper! Those girlie chats that lasted long into the night, the delicious meals shared over lunch and dinner and of course, shopping, oh how I miss shopping with the ladies. I will definitely return to Utrecht again, but with B and N, to visit some of their lovely museums that I missed on this trip.
